SSL creates a protected connection between a visitor's browser and your website. It helps keep information private while it travels across the Internet.

Think of SSL as a locked envelope for information that would otherwise travel like an open postcard.

SSL protects information while it travels.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. The modern technology is more accurately called TLS, but people still commonly use the familiar term “SSL.”

Is SSL the same as HTTPS?

SSL/TLS is the technology that protects the connection. HTTPS is the secure web address visitors see when that protection is active.

Does SSL protect my entire website from every threat?

No. SSL protects information in transit. You still need updates, strong passwords, backups, secure software, and responsible website management.

Why does my browser not always show a padlock?

Browser interfaces change. Some now use a site-information or settings icon instead. Confirm that the address begins with https:// and review the connection information provided by the browser.

What is a mixed-content warning?

It can happen when an HTTPS page still loads an image, script, or other resource through HTTP. Those old links should be updated to secure HTTPS versions.

Can an SSL certificate expire?

Yes. Certificates have expiration dates, but many hosting systems renew them automatically. It is still wise to check your website regularly.
