SSL creates a protected connection between a visitor's browser and your website. It helps keep information private while it travels across the Internet.
Think of SSL as a locked envelope for information that would otherwise travel like an open postcard.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. The modern technology is more accurately called TLS, but people still commonly use the familiar term “SSL.”
When SSL is active, information sent between a visitor and your website is encrypted. Encryption changes readable information into a protected form while it travels, making it much harder for an outsider to understand if intercepted.
Remember: HTTPS is the visible sign that the connection is using SSL/TLS protection.

Browser designs change, and some no longer display a traditional padlock in the same way. Look for https:// and use the browser's site-information control to review connection details.
The technical process happens very quickly and automatically. Visitors do not need to do anything special.

It can happen when an HTTPS page still loads an image, script, or other resource through HTTP. Those old links should be updated to secure HTTPS versions.
