DNS Propagation: How Long It Takes and How to Check It

Propagation is the period in which cached DNS answers expire after a change. Different networks may temporarily receive different answers even when the authoritative zone is correct.

Before you begin

Sign in through the official client area and keep account-specific values from your activation email available. Make a backup before changing production data or configuration.

Steps

  1. Confirm authority: Check which nameservers the registrar publishes, then edit records only at that provider.
  2. Check the authoritative answer: Query the intended record and compare it with the value saved in the active zone.
  3. Compare networks: Test with a mobile connection and a second public resolver. Differences usually indicate caching.
  4. Clear local state: Restart the browser, flush the operating-system DNS cache, and restart the router only if it maintains its own cache.
  5. Separate DNS from hosting: If the name resolves to the correct IP but the page errors, investigate SSL, web-server, or application configuration instead.

Important notes

  • The previous record’s TTL determines how long an older answer may remain cached.
  • Frequent edits during propagation make diagnosis harder; settle on the correct value and allow caches to expire.

When to contact support

Contact support if the documented controls are unavailable, the service reports an account-level restriction, or the issue continues after these checks. Include the affected domain or service, the exact error, a timestamp with timezone, and the steps already tried. Never include passwords, one-time codes, private keys, or complete payment details.
